You are not alone

Millions of UK households carry credit card, loan or overdraft debt. High interest and minimum payments trap people for years. The good news: small changes to payment strategy often cut years off repayment.

List everything you owe

Write each debt: balance, APR, minimum payment and whether it is priority (rent, council tax, energy arrears) or non-priority (credit cards, personal loans). Priority debts have serious consequences if ignored — tackle those first with advice if needed.

Snowball vs avalanche

Snowball: pay minimums on all debts, put extra money toward the smallest balance first. Quick wins build motivation.

Avalanche: put extra toward the highest APR debt first. Mathematically cheapest — you pay less total interest.

Both work if you stick with them. Our debt snowball calculator models the snowball approach.

Pay more than the minimum

On credit cards, minimum payments mostly feed interest. An extra £50–£100 per month can halve payoff time. Use our credit card calculator to see the impact on your balance.

Balance transfers and consolidation

0% balance transfer cards pause interest for a set period — watch transfer fees and clear before the rate jumps. Debt consolidation loans simplify payments but only help if the APR is lower and you do not run up cards again.

Cut spending and automate payments

Temporary budget cuts — subscriptions, takeaways, unused memberships — free cash for debt. Set a fixed payment date right after payday so money moves before you spend it.

Do not borrow to repay without a plan

Payday loans and high-cost credit make problems worse. If you cannot meet minimums, seek free help rather than borrowing more.
