Calculator
What this means
Understanding your total energy costs helps with household budgeting. Standing charges apply daily regardless of usage, on top of unit rates for gas and electricity.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your estimated annual or monthly energy usage in kWh.
- Add your unit rates and standing charges.
- See your estimated bill.
Worked example
You use 2,700 kWh of electricity a year at 25p per kWh.
- 2,700 kWh × £0.25 = £675 a year in usage.
- Add the daily standing charge across 365 days.
Your usage cost is around £675 plus standing charges for the year.
Who this is for
- Households budgeting for energy bills.
- People comparing tariffs or fixed deals.
- Anyone checking a supplier's estimate looks right.
What makes up your energy bill
Your bill has two parts: a unit rate for each kWh of gas and electricity you use, and a daily standing charge you pay regardless of usage. Both are capped for many households by the energy price cap.
Cutting usage reduces the unit-rate part of your bill but not the standing charge. Comparing tariffs and fixing a rate can help when prices are volatile.
Frequently asked questions
Standing charges are fixed daily fees covering network costs and supplier administration. They apply even when you use no energy.
Energy bills include VAT at 5% for domestic supplies. Include whatever figures appear on your bill or statement.
Compare tariffs, improve insulation, reduce usage and check eligibility for support schemes such as the Warm Home Discount.
A fixed daily fee for being connected to the gas and electricity networks. You pay it even if you use no energy, so it sets a floor under your bill.
Reduce usage (heating, appliances, insulation), compare tariffs, and submit regular meter readings so you're billed on actual use rather than estimates.
