How council tax bands work
Every home is placed in a band (A to H in England) based on its estimated value, and each local authority sets its own charge per band. Band D is the common reference point.
Discounts and exemptions exist — for example a 25% single-person discount, or reductions for students and low-income households through Council Tax Reduction.
Frequently asked questions
Bands are based on the property's valuation by the Valuation Office Agency (England/Wales) or Scottish Assessors. Market value today may differ from the valuation date.
England, Scotland and Wales each have their own band thresholds and letter bands (Wales includes band I).
Yes, if you believe your property is in the wrong band you can appeal to the Valuation Office Agency or relevant assessor.
Yes, in many cases. A single adult gets 25% off, full-time students may be exempt, and low-income households can apply for Council Tax Reduction through their council.
You can ask the Valuation Office Agency to review your band if you think it's wrong, but it can go up as well as down, so check comparable properties first.
